Background: Ketones are a highly efficient fuel for the brain and muscles. Therefore, one might predict that supplementation with ketone ester would improve physical and cognitive performance.
Results: Three groups of rats were given diets containing the same number of calories, supplemented with either fats, carbohydrates, or ketone ester as fuel. The rats that received the ketone ester ran 32% longer on a treadmill and completed a maze puzzle 38% faster, and with fewer mistakes, than the other groups of rats.
